We review the unemployment figures for women published by the State Public Employment Service
No income, no conciliation and depending on SEPE subsidies. This is the reality in Spain for almost 100,000 long-term unemployed women according to the latest unemployment data and the report published by the Trescom consultancy on the occasion of 8M.
These numbers make women the protagonists of exclusion in the labor market. Many times this is because they are usually the ones who have to resign at work in order to reconcile with family life.

Those most affected by this lack of job opportunities are the disabled, those over 55 years of age and those with ‘not shared’ family responsibilities, as well as victims of gender-based violence.

Long-term unemployment
The unemployment data for the month of February speak of four million unemployed (not counting the 900,000 workers in ERTE). Of those, 1,500,000 people have been without work for 12 months or more. This is what is known as a long-term unemployed.
Of this number, 57% are women according to EPA data collected by the Adecco Foundation. This is 12% more than last year. The Government blames the bad unemployment data on the Covid19 crisis.
But feminists do not think the same. Companies neglect women because they tend to cause more “problems” than men. Maternity, dependent care, housework, usually fall on the female side. And that is why every March 8 is celebrated International Women’s Day.
Unemployment benefit for the long-term unemployed
In most cases, women who have been out of work for more than 12 months have to request unemployment benefits from the SEPE. The direct consequence of long-term unemployment is that benefits are terminated (contributory or not).
And now that? Without economic income and a complex situation that often leads to social exclusion.
These data are of concern to the SEPE, which is why they offer financial aid to temporarily solve problems. But what is really needed is an active job search policy that facilitates insertion into the labor market.

Problems for the labor inclusion of unemployed women
According to sources consulted by the Trescom consultancy, the problems for the return to work of long-term unemployed women are born from stereotypes.
Society considers that, after a certain age (more than 45 as a general rule), women do not have the capacity to retrain professionally.
That is, in these times of teleworking, companies want to hire professionals who are well managed in the IT sector, that of information technology.
This, together with the need for continuous professional training, means that many women are left out of the selection processes.
Experts, however, advise hiring women of these ages because their commitment to the company is very high, and they are also in perfect condition to take training courses.
